Castello di Volpaia: Wine, Heritage, and Hospitality in the Heart of Chianti

Castello di Volpaia is a perfectly preserved medieval hamlet turned vineyard estate in Chianti. On our family visit, we experienced a private tour and wine tasting hosted by the gracious Mascheroni Stianti family. Between the award-winning wines, exquisite olive oil, and timeless scenery, this was a highlight of our Tuscan journey.

A Chianti Gem Steeped in History

Perched on a hillside in the commune of Radda in Chianti, Castello di Volpaia is one of Tuscany’s most captivating secrets. Unlike many estates that only focus on wine, Volpaia is a fully preserved 12th-century fortified village that has seamlessly blended its medieval charm with cutting-edge wine production. The name “Volpaia” itself originates from the Latin “Vallis Plana”—the flat valley—a nod to the region’s historic roots.

Walking into Volpaia feels like stepping back in time. The cobbled streets, stone walls, and ancient watchtowers all whisper stories from centuries past. But beyond the picturesque exteriors lies a thriving vineyard that produces world-renowned Chianti Classico wines, all crafted using sustainable, organic farming practices.

Meet the Mascheroni Stianti Family

The heart and soul of Volpaia today lies with the Mascheroni Stianti family, a dynamic mother-daughter duo who have turned this historic site into a beacon of Tuscany’s winemaking excellence. On our visit, we were personally greeted and guided by a family member, making the experience feel more like being welcomed by old friends than tourists.

Their passion for both wine and preservation is contagious. As they walked us through the stone archways and down into the ancient cellars, we saw firsthand how they’ve hidden modern winemaking equipment beneath the historical structures—an ingenious integration of old and new.

The Art of Winemaking at Volpaia

Volpaia is best known for producing Chianti Classico DOCG wines, which are among the finest expressions of the Sangiovese grape. Their wines are characterized by bright cherry and blackberry notes, smooth tannins, and a rustic yet elegant finish that speaks of the region’s soil and climate.

We had the pleasure of tasting:

  • Chianti Classico 2020 – vibrant, fruit-forward, and a classic expression of Sangiovese.
  • Chianti Classico Riserva 2019 – deeper, more structured, with earthy notes and a long finish.
  • Coltassala Gran Selezione – the crown jewel. A bold, refined wine aged in oak barrels, showing black cherry, leather, and spice.

Each pour was accompanied by stories of the vineyard’s vintage, terroir, and care that goes into each bottle. These weren’t just wines—they were stories in a glass.

A Tasting Experience Like No Other

The tasting room at Castello di Volpaia is unlike any we’ve experienced. Housed in what used to be a chapel, it now serves as a serene, sacred space for wine lovers. Bathed in natural light and lined with rustic wood tables, it was the perfect setting to slow down and savor every sip.

The staff’s knowledge and enthusiasm were just as impressive as the wines themselves. They guided us through a thoughtfully curated tasting flight, answering questions, offering pairing suggestions, and creating an atmosphere that was both educational and deeply personal.

Olive Oil: Tuscany’s Liquid Gold

What surprised and delighted us was Volpaia’s extra virgin olive oil, which is hand-harvested from trees surrounding the estate. This isn’t your average supermarket oil—this is bold, peppery, intensely flavorful olive oil that immediately elevates any dish.

We dipped fresh bread into the oil, sprinkled a bit of sea salt, and honestly—had a moment. This olive oil is worthy of being shipped home in bulk. It’s available in beautifully packaged bottles and also makes a fantastic gift.

A Stay in Medieval Luxury

While we didn’t stay overnight, Castello di Volpaia offers guest accommodations in beautifully restored villas and suites, right within the hamlet. Imagine waking up to the sounds of birds and church bells, sipping espresso overlooking the vineyards, and strolling down stone paths to a wine tasting.

Guests can also enjoy cooking classes, guided wine tours, and seasonal harvest experiences. For those staying longer, there are bikes for rent and endless trails through vineyards and olive groves.

Osteria Volpaia: Dining with a View

Whether you’re a guest or just visiting for the day, make time to dine at Osteria Volpaia, the estate’s charming restaurant. It’s known for farm-to-table Tuscan cuisine—think hand-rolled pici pasta with truffle, bistecca alla fiorentina, and panna cotta drizzled with estate honey.

The wine list, of course, features Volpaia’s full lineup, and the views from the terrace are unbeatable, especially during golden hour. If food and wine are your love language, this is your spot.

Sustainability and Stewardship

Castello di Volpaia is certified organic and committed to sustainable farming practices, including gravity-fed cellars and solar-powered production systems. The estate is a shining example of how tradition and innovation can work hand in hand.

They even use glass stoppers on certain wines instead of corks, reducing waste while preserving the wine’s integrity. Every detail reflects a respect for both the environment and the cultural heritage of Chianti.

How to Visit

Volpaia is located about an hour from Florence and 40 minutes from Siena, nestled in the hills of the Chianti Classico region. Advance reservations for tastings and tours are highly recommended, especially in peak travel seasons.

You can book directly through their website or through guided tour companies that include Volpaia in their Chianti wine itineraries. Some tastings include food pairings, vertical tastings, or special access to historical buildings on the property.

Insider Tip: Try to book a tasting during the late afternoon, so you can catch the sunset over the hills—an unforgettable way to end your visit.

Why You Must Add Volpaia to Your Chianti Itinerary

There are many wineries in Tuscany, but very few offer the immersive, heartfelt experience that Castello di Volpaia does. It’s not just about the wine (though the wine is exceptional). It’s about walking through history, connecting with people who care deeply about what they do, and leaving with more than just souvenirs—you leave with stories.

We left Volpaia with a case of wine, a tin of olive oil, and full hearts. It’s a place that captures the spirit of Tuscany—elegance, simplicity, tradition, and hospitality.

Want to sip Chianti where history lives in every glass? Book a visit to Castello di Volpaia, and experience Tuscany the way it was meant to be—authentic, flavorful, and full of heart.
